Flowchart: Black and White. Vol II.

As Flowchart: Black and White starts to take shape, I realize that from the first marks (blocks of carved wood) on the canvas until now has taken roughly five years.  Not continuous work, but the first marks were laid down at least five years ago.

Here are a few sketches of what I think will be on the third (final?) layer.

Some pop culture goodness.

Lynching tree

Richie Rich.

Drawings of Mande-influenced dwellings.

Without colors in the top layer, the composition kinda looks overcrowded/too busy.  Hopefully once I start painting on it things begin to coalesce.

A few detail shots.  The 'gr y c t' for the hangman game is a reference to the saying "In the dark, all cats are gray".

Another look at the hangman game.  Down in the lower left corner is Prince Chawmin' from the 1943 cartoon "Coal Black and The Sebben' Dwarfs" (The cartoon is one of The Censored Eleven cartoons).

Every thing is basically in place.  Now it's time to add color(s).

That is where the piece stands right now.  I still need to do some touch-up line work, and possibly even a light haze coat to help bring out the letter blocks.  We'll check out progress on the carved frame next time we take a look at Flowchart: Black and White.
